Unfortunately, it took me too many years of working more hours than I should and getting to the point of burn out, before I figured this out.
Even though I had a business degree, there was nowhere I could go to find out how to open or run a retail business.
There was no community of retailers who would openly share their knowledge or experience.

My first store opened in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis.
Setting myself up for failure from the start, right?
But I was determined to make it work.
The reality of the situation was this:
there was nowhere I could go to find out how to open or run a retail business.
There was no community of retailers who would openly share their knowledge or experience.
Heck, we didn’t have data on our phones, so mobile ecommerce wasn’t even in existence!
I spent every waking moment learning all about websites, point of sale systems, marketing, sales and being a boss.
Wasted a lot of money, trying different things.
Looking back, I wasn’t great at celebrating the moments of success, of which there were many.
Ultimately, that first store grew, creating a fabulous retail experience for my customers and an inspiring and empowering culture for my staff.
All of which added up to a multi-award-winning chain of retail stores, years down the track.
One of my team asked me WHY I was at work (it was a Friday).
“I’ve got a super busy day ahead”, I replied.
But I didn’t.
I had ‘processed’ myself out of my business.
The ultimate goal for most business owners. A team that works perfectly, when you’re not there.
Employees who love coming to work, and knew their jobs better than I did.
There was no need for me to be there every day.
And with this light bulb moment came the realisation that if the stores no longer needed me, then my heart was no longer in it.
And now that’s exactly what I do.
Filling each day, helping independent retailers, just like you, to increase their sales, hire the right people and maximise their profits.
Instilling confidence, providing guidance and sharing everything I learnt, from the costly mistakes right through to the big wins, so that you can replicate the successes and avoid the pitfalls.
My super-power is being able to instantly see what’s not working, and my mind immediately starts developing strategies on how to fix them.
